Veterans may experience mental health issues after returning from combat due to the traumatic events they've survived.
As Veterans Day approaches, we at Crimson Wellness take a moment to reflect on the bravery and sacrifices made by our nation’s Veterans. Their service has shaped our nation's history and safeguarded our freedoms. Supporting Veterans in their journey toward mental health and wellness is essential to honoring their commitment and sacrifice. Our nation's veterans have displayed resilience and courage, and they deserve our collective efforts to support their well-being.
Veterans come from every corner of America, bringing with them a tapestry of backgrounds and experiences. American Indian "code talkers" played a critical role in both World Wars, using their Indigenous languages to send coded messages. During WWII, over a million Black Americans served, breaking barriers in all branches of the military. The Department of Defense reports that Hispanic or Latino individuals comprised nearly 18.4% of active-duty members in 2022, while women are now the fastest-growing group of Veterans. Additionally, the rate of military service among transgender individuals is significantly higher than in the general population. This diversity enriches the military and underscores the unique perspectives and strengths Veterans bring back to civilian life.
Minority Veterans, including racial and ethnic minorities, LGBTQI+ individuals, and women, have made extraordinary contributions despite facing historical discrimination and adversity. Their service has not only upheld our nation’s ideals but also paved the way for progress, including President Truman’s Executive Order 9981 in 1948, which desegregated the military, and the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" in 2011. This legacy reflects not only a dedication to our country but also a commitment to justice and equality.
Transitioning from military to civilian life can be challenging. Each year, around 200,000 service members leave the military, with many facing struggles related to mental health, trauma, and substance use. In 2022, 5.8 million Veterans reported experiencing a behavioral health condition. Minority Veterans, in particular, often confront additional psychosocial stressors. Suicide rates are disproportionately high among American Indian and Alaska Native Veterans, while Black Veterans face elevated risks of unemployment and incarceration. Military sexual trauma and the transition-related stress experienced by Veterans and their families further highlight the need for accessible, empathetic, and culturally responsive mental health services.
Providing effective care means understanding and respecting each Veteran's cultural background and service experience. Using data tools such as SAMHSA’s Measuring Communities portal can help providers understand Veterans' unique demographics and needs, allowing for more tailored support. Organizations like Minority Veterans of America continue to advocate for inclusive care, ensuring that every Veteran receives the recognition, care, and resources they deserve.
The VA's mission, updated in 2023, reinforces this commitment: "To fulfill President Lincoln’s promise to care for those who have served in our nation’s military and for their families, caregivers, and survivors." This pledge reflects our national responsibility not only to Veterans but also to those who support them.

This Veterans Day, let us come together to strengthen the support network for all Veterans. Their service deserves not just our gratitude but our continued commitment to provide them with the support they need to thrive in their civilian lives. At Crimson Wellness, we are honored to stand with those who have served.
