In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month 2025, Crimson Wellness invites our community to reflect on this truth:
Helping others is a powerful act of healing—not just for them, but for you too.
🫶 Whether you’re volunteering your time, checking in on a friend, mentoring someone, or offering support to a neighbor—your kindness creates connection. And that connection has measurable benefits for your own mental health. Research shows that acts of service can lower stress, reduce anxiety, improve mood, and foster a deeper sense of purpose.
Volunteering is wellness in action.
But what does helping look like when someone is struggling with their mental health?
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), there are practical, compassionate ways you can support a person who is facing mental health challenges—whether you're a friend, relative, or member of a faith or peer community.
💚 How to Help Someone with a Mental Health Condition
1. Listen without judgment.
Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is offer a safe space for someone to share without fear of criticism or advice. Let them talk. Be present.
2. Educate yourself.
Learning about their condition can help you better understand what they’re going through and how best to support them.
3. Avoid minimizing their experience.
Phrases like “just think positive” or “others have it worse” may be well-intentioned but can feel dismissive. Instead, say things like, “That sounds really difficult. I’m here for you.”
4. Respect their autonomy.
Support doesn’t mean taking control. Ask how you can help rather than assuming. Empower their voice and choices.
5. Encourage professional help.
Let them know it's okay to reach out to a therapist, psychiatrist, or support group. Offer to help them research options or go with them if they’re open to it.
6. Stay connected.
Follow up. Invite them to things. Check in regularly. Isolation can make things worse, and your ongoing support can be a lifeline.
7. Take care of yourself too.
Supporting others is powerful, but you can’t pour from an empty cup. Prioritize your own mental health and boundaries.
🌍 The Ripple Effect of Kindness
When we help others, we create a ripple effect that strengthens the whole community. At Crimson Wellness, we’ve seen firsthand how acts of service, peer support, and compassionate listening transform lives—on both sides of the conversation.
So during #MHAM2025 and every day after, we encourage you to:
Your action could be the encouragement someone else needs to take their next step toward healing.
